This issue in brief

The Biomedical Sciences section starts with a study on the municipalization of health in Angola, focused on the province of Cabinda. This is a major exploratory paper focusing on the needs of human resources in health, essential for the future and an example for the countries of our Lusophone community (Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.274)

The three articles that continue this section are from the area of human Nutrition and Food. An original study applied to more than three hundred mothers sought to establish the factors influencing the duration of breastfeeding among mothers in Portugal, identifying education and information as essential to improve related indicators (Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.276)

In continuation, another original study on the anthropometric assessment of preschool and school children in European Macaronesia is presented. This manuscript completes a series of articles developed on the same theme in this geographical region, exposing some particularities and needs that contribute to improved development of these children and future adults which should be drawn to the attention of education and health authorities (Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.278)

The following article discusses food insecurity in households in the Algarve. This study follows the first assessment of food insecurity carried out by the Regional Food Security Observatory and may contribute to improving intervention methodologies in these areas (Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.282)

Another original paper on the importance of movement in maintaining peripheral circulatory function follows. This work is part of a Ph.D. project whose authors have previously shared some of their findings within our journal. This particular study focuses on the impact of plantar flexion, thinking about the application of this knowledge in a Home-health context Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.286)

Finally, this section closes with an important exploratory short-paper aimed at gauging the preparedness of community pharmacy professionals to train on the administration of adrenaline via autoinjectors - the first-line (self) treatment of anaphylaxis. The manuscript that begins the Biopharmaceutical Sciences section is a review of membrane separation technology, critically important in the chemical and pharmaceutical sector. It is spatially focused on electrodialysis. (Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.285)

The two articles which follow focus on very recent data on COVID-19 vaccines in Portugal, analyzing the reports on undesirable effects by vaccine type, gender and age until July 2021 (Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.277) and some of the serious adverse reactions recorded for these vaccines in the same period (Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.279). To the attention of the appropriate public health authorities.

This section continues with a manuscript on another very current topic in pharmaceutical formulation technology. The focus is on ionic liquids used to improve solubility and aid in the incorporation of diverse compounds into carrier systems. (Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.280)

The following article results from a line of research that has been studying the impact of essential oils from plants of indigenous flora on human skin. In this case, the essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf is studied and its interest in improving skin hydration is demonstrated (Biomed Biopharm Res., doi: 10.19277/bbr.19.1.284)

The section closes with another original article on bioactives of natural origin, studying the antioxidant capacity and hepatoprotective effect of ethanolic extract of A. edulis. These activities are widely known in traditional medicine, and here important supporting evidence was obtained in vitro in mice.
