BBR Volume 18, Number 2
This issue in brief
The Biomedical Sciences section begins with a Clinical Case dedicated to Hereditary Hemochromatosis (Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 3-8. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.263).
The section continues with a case study assessing the nutritional risk in elderly adults of a senior residence. The study is centered in malnutrition, a serious issue in particular environments and a major concern for families and authorities. This study confirmed that malnutrition and risk of malnutrition are real, highlighting the need for nutritional intervention (Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 9-20. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.270).
The next manuscript reviews the links between the intestinal microbiota and other physiological functions through the gut-brain axis. The current knowledge of kefir, a well known probiotic, is here explored as an immunomodulator and a health-promoting food (Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 21-35. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.261).
Another research paper continues this section exploring the use of well known human wearable technologies such as photopletismography (PPG) in veterinary presurgical setting to assess cardiac and respiratory activity in dogs. This exploratory study shows a non-explored but promising application setting for these systems (Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 36-44. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.264).
Continuing in these domains of microcirculation, the following paper presents a new functional imaging system an Optoacoustic Tomography (OAT) recently available. This non-invasive system bridges optical and sonographic techniques to solve spatial resolution in deep-tissue imaging, showing an important applied and preclinical potential (Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 45-57. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.269).
The section concludes with a review on sexual violence against children, revealing that this type of sexual violence is currently emerging as an endemic threat worldwide, presenting multiple challenges, social as health, to societies. A disturbing as important narrative found in Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 58-72 (doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.266).
The Biopharmaceutical Sciences section begins with a research paper on rapid UV-Vis spectroscopy methods for quantification of ranitidine tablets, a widely used medication for the treatment and prophylaxis of peptic ulcer and gastroesophageal reflux disease. This educational manuscript shows how to design, approach and solve common analytical challenges from a quality control perspective (Biomed Biopharm Res.,2021,18(2),73-82. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.271).
Continuing this section, the following paper is focused on transferosomes as nanovesicular systems to enhance the skin permeation of bioactive compounds. The paper approaches and compares the impact on the physicochemical properties and the in vitro cytotoxicity profile of different transferosomal formulations (Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 83-96. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.267).
The next two papers respects cosmetic science research, a regular theme in this section within our journal. This first study focus cosmetic films and evaluates the moisturizing properties of films with ascorbic acid and hyaluronic acid in their composition (Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 97-107. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.262).
The next paper illustrates the importance of innovation to address old problems with satisfactory solutions as it happens with oily skin. Here the authors developed a cosmetic formulation containing vitamin B3 for the treatment of oily skin and test its efficacy and acceptance by using biophysical and sensorial analysis (Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 108-118. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.273).
Closing this section an original manuscript researching the aggregation of Islet Amyloid PolyPeptide (IAPP), a contributor to pancreatic β-cell dysfunction and type 2 diabetes. The authors are particularly interested in studying the protective potential of Cecropia pachystachya against IAPP-induced cytotoxicity which seems to be a promising research path (Biomed Biopharm Res., 2021, 18(2), 119-135. doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.272).
Finally, this issue also includes two Supplements only available in this online version – the LVI Annual Congress of the Brazilian Society of Physiology (SBF) ePoster Abstracts, held online in October 2021 (doi: 10.19277/bbr.18.2.265) and the Abstract Book of the 33rd Brazilian Congress of Cosmetology, 2021 doi:10.19277/bbr.18.2.268) – two important science meetings supported by our journal.
