This issue in a brief notes
This volume brings together all the publications from the year 2024, including Original Articles, Review Articles and Case Studies, as well as a number dedicated to the Books of Abstracts of various scientific events of different dimensions in Portugal and Brazil.
The Original Articles section begins with an article from the field of chemical synthesis applied to natural products, one of the main themes of our publication - the asymmetric Adler-Becker reaction, proposing new research directions in this reaction (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 4-14. doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.334).
The next theme, centred on the search for early indicators of vascular alteration in young tobacco smokers with no clinical complaints or manifestations, warns of the possibility of very early vascular risk, even without clinical expression, associated with regular consumption (for more than a year) of tobacco smoke.
A particularly relevant topic in terms of community health to follow (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 15-26. doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.333).
In this section we also find another highly topical issue centred on the exposome and skin health - this time evaluating the impact of a combination of vitamins intended to be incorporated into a cosmetic formulation to protect the skin barrier (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 27-42. doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.335).
This is followed by another article centred on the properties of a honey of remote origin. Honey is one of the best-known natural products used in traditional
medicine, but the scientific evidence for many of its properties is still insufficient. This article demonstrates for the first time the impact of honey on strengthening the balance of epidermal water, which likely explains part of its healing properties (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 43-55. doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.346).
The influence of social networks and especially Instagram® on consumers' daily habits and choices, regardless of age, is the main theme of the article we publish here. It focuses on the influence of this application and digital content creators on the food choices of a group of university students (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 56-69, doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.342).
This section closes with another original article from an international collaboration that analyses the main determinants that have conditioned access to food during the recent COVID-19 pandemic in Ecuador, in the canton of Riobamba. It draws attention to the need to safeguard basic aspects related to access to healthy food in developing countries and vulnerable populations whose exposure to global health problems will have dramatic impacts that will be difficult to recover from (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 70-86, doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.343).
The Reviews Section publishes a review resulting from another international collaboration, focusing on the taxonomy, ethnobotany, phytochemistry and biological activities of Neocarya macrophylla (Chrysobalanaceae) a species from West Africa characterised by its wide use, from food to traditional medicine, including industrial interest in a broad spectrum of applications. The review relates in particular the physicochemical, nutritional, phytochemical and pharmacological content from the perspective of its use as a food and health product (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 87-108. doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.331).
The evaluation of pharmaceutical intervention in patient adherence to antibiotic therapy is the subject of the following review. This is a topic of the utmost importance, not only because of the role of adherence to antibiotic therapy, but also because of the relevance of pharmaceutical intervention, which is recognised as underused, in the healthcare system. As this topic is still poorly documented, we particularly recommend reading it (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 109-126, doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.337).
The section concludes with a review of a popular noninvasive cosmetic procedure designed to improve the length and thickness of natural lashes. This review on eyelash extensions, of particular interest to professionals in the sector, covers the current state of the scientific literature on this subject, identifying limitations and opportunities (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 127-139. doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.332).
The Case Study section publishes a highly modern topic on Telerehabilitation as a transformative approach to traditional physiotherapy, presenting the results of a recent clinical study supported by the Clynx® Platform. The highly promising results particularly highlight the convenience and flexibility - optimisation of time, as well as the economy and sustainability of the resources mobilised, with objective advantages for all those involved in the process (Biomed Biopharm Res, 2024; 21(1), 140-162. doi: 10.19277/bbr.21.1.329).
This volume also includes six additional Supplements in the Abstracts of Scientific Meetings section - the Book of Abstracts of the IV Jornadas Lusófonas de Nutrição (10.19277/bbr.21.2.336) and the Book of Abstracts of the CBIOS 2024 Sessions (10.19277/bbr.21.2.345) organised by CBIOS - Universidade Lusofona Research Center for Biosciences and Health Technologies, the Book of Abstracts 36º Congresso Brasileiro de Cosmetologia (10.19277/bbr.21.2.338) organised by ABC - Associação Brasileira de Cosmetologia, the Books of Abstracts of the XXXVIII Annual Meeting (10.19277/bbr.21.2.339) and FeSBE Regional 2024 - Uberlândia (10.19277/bbr.21.2.344) organised by FeSBE - Federação de Sociedades de Biologia Experimental, and the Book of Abstracts of the LIX Congresso Anual da SBFis (10.19277/bbr.21.2.340) organised by SBFis - Sociedade Brasileira de Fisiologia.
We thank these contributors for choosing to share their work with the world through our journal. We invite you to participate in this endeavour next year.
